When Mortadella arrived at the Brant County SPCA, she was a fragile, frightened kitten rescued from the dump alongside her sister, Bear. The two were not given the start that any animal deserves, like so many on their own, they had to fight to survive. “They had been subjected to the hard conditions of the environment,” Animal Care Team Member Athena recalled, “like extreme heat, lack of food, illness, and predators like coyotes.” During their spay appointments, Athena and the team discovered just how feral and terrified the sisters were. “They were hissing at the slightest movement,” Athena explained. It was thought that the two would be enrolled in our […]
Mother’s Day is around the corner and this week, we’re celebrating all kinds of moms! When we first shared Nala’s story, she had just given birth to twelve beautiful puppies. But her journey into motherhood took a sudden, frightening turn. Nala became dangerously ill—weak, lethargic, and unable to care for her babies. She needed urgent help. So did her pups. Thanks to your compassion—and the fast action of her foster families—Nala is recovering. Moms are strong, resilient and a part of a community that understands each other. Nala needed help when it came to caring for her babies, and a group of amazing foster moms stepped up. They’ve taken on […]
Not long ago, we introduced you to Nala, a sweet, gentle mama who captured all our hearts when she gave birth to twelve beautiful puppies. But motherhood isn’t always easy. Nala was rushed to the veterinary clinic after becoming lethargic, refusing food, vomiting, and spiking a dangerously high fever. It was terrifying to see—this devoted mom—suddenly so fragile. Thanks to swift action from her foster and expert care, Nala is showing signs of improvement. But her journey is far from over. Her care requires close monitoring, and specialized support—and the costs are rising rapidly. And it’s not just Nala who needs us now. Because of her weakened condition, Nala can […]
At the Brant County SPCA, every day brings something new—and on April 1st, it brought us something extra special. Through our Moving Hearts program, we welcomed Nala, a sweet and gentle mother. What we didn’t expect was that Nala had plans of her own: just a few short hours after arriving in our care, she went into labour. And by the end of the day, she had given birth to 12 healthy puppies. Yes, twelve. While it may have been April Fools Day, this was no joke. It was the beginning of a very real, very big responsibility—and one we’re honoured to take on. Nala and her puppies were immediately […]

This summer, in the midst of the scorching heat, Misty—a sweet and very pregnant Chihuahua—found her way to the Brant County SPCA. Like any new mother, Misty needed a village, and we were there to support her every step of the way. After an ultrasound, we estimated her due date and realized she would need a special foster home. Misty was measuring large, and there was a concern that she might need an emergency C-section. During her stay with us, Misty quickly bonded with our staff—especially with Amy, who often had Misty snuggled on her lap while she worked. It was clear they shared a special connection, so when it […]
