Many people are surprised to learn that the Brant County SPCA is not funded by the government. Yes, we work hard to apply for grants (and are so grateful when we receive them) but our organization relies on events, sponsorships, donations…and most importantly, people like you to support our life saving work. People like 9-year-old Claire, our official Second Chance Circle Ambassador. With the support of her parents, Jenilee and Kyle, Claire launched her own pet care business: C. Avey Pets in 2022. What began as pet sitting for family and friends has grown into a thriving business built on compassion, dedication, and heart. But Claire didn’t stop there. She […]
In Ozzy’s short life, he has known suffering… He has known sorrow and heartbreak and pain – and yet, a glimmer of hope still shines in him. He still greets our staff with a wagging tail and those pleading puppy dog eyes that steal your heart. Almost exactly two years ago, Ozzy walked through our doors with his sister, both fighting for their lives. They had 0% body fat when they arrived, nothing to keep them warm from the unpredictable weather. Ozzy weighed half of what he should have as a 5-month-old pup, and his sister was no better. We weren’t sure what the future held for the two siblings, […]
When Mortadella arrived at the Brant County SPCA, she was a fragile, frightened kitten rescued from the dump alongside her sister, Bear. The two were not given the start that any animal deserves, like so many on their own, they had to fight to survive. “They had been subjected to the hard conditions of the environment,” Animal Care Team Member Athena recalled, “like extreme heat, lack of food, illness, and predators like coyotes.” During their spay appointments, Athena and the team discovered just how feral and terrified the sisters were. “They were hissing at the slightest movement,” Athena explained. It was thought that the two would be enrolled in our […]
Mother’s Day is around the corner and this week, we’re celebrating all kinds of moms! When we first shared Nala’s story, she had just given birth to twelve beautiful puppies. But her journey into motherhood took a sudden, frightening turn. Nala became dangerously ill—weak, lethargic, and unable to care for her babies. She needed urgent help. So did her pups. Thanks to your compassion—and the fast action of her foster families—Nala is recovering. Moms are strong, resilient and a part of a community that understands each other. Nala needed help when it came to caring for her babies, and a group of amazing foster moms stepped up. They’ve taken on […]
Our Fospice program is perhaps one of the most rewarding programs we offer at the Brant County SPCA. It places animals who are terminally ill in incredible homes to live out their golden days. It takes a special type of person to take on a Fospice animal, and we are extremely thankful for the incredible people who come forward to provide care for the animals who need it most. Animals like Vinny and Boof. From Vinny’s Fospice Family: For those of you following his journey, our sweet Vinny passed away on May 1st, 2023. I have never known a dog who had such a profound impact on others in such […]
Have you ever felt a little lost? Unsure of what your next steps in life are? For me, this feeling came a little later in life. It wasn’t until my health started to decline that I found myself lost, but with a little hope and some help from my friends, I was found. It’s a funny thing; getting older. When I was younger, I could run for hours, only stopping to get a quick drink before I was off again…now I still run – but it seems as though each day brings a new ache or pain. Maybe it was because I was getting older? Or that I started to […]
