Project Patchwork

Black, Emmy & Lilah

Black, a 7-year-old Saint Bernard, became a member of the Brant County SPCA family on March 1st 2017 after being abandoned by his previous owners. Upon arrival to the shelter it was evident Black had some challenges with his ear.  The inside of Black’s ear was badly infected and filled with discharge. Testing revealed the infection was due to two types of bacteria – E. coli and Staphylococcus within the ear canal.   After several vet visits, various medications to attempt to clear up the issue, it became clear medication was not the solution Black needed to heal his ear. Black was sent for a consultation with a specialist at the University of Guelph, where it was determined the best course of action was to perform TECA BO surgery- all harmful and infected tissue within his ear would be removed.  Cost estimates for Black’s surgery has reached $3000-$4000 thousand dollars.

Emmy, a 2-year-old Saint Bernard came to the Brant County SPCA on May 21st 2017 when she was surrendered for care by her previous owner.  Emmy requires extensive cruciate surgery on her knee that will be performed by a mobile specialist. Emmy will undergo her surgery at the end of June 2017. Cost estimates for her surgery have also reached $3000-$4000 dollars.

Lilah, a 6 year old Shih Tzu came into the care of the Brant County SPCA on May 13 2017 as a stray. Upon examination, it was found Lilah had extensive tooth decay that would require surgery to remove the rotten teeth. Her surgery is estimated at $1400.  Lilah is scheduled for surgery at the beginning of July to beautify her smile for her new family.

These animals all fall under our Project Patchwork. Project Patchwork is part of our animal care program with the goal of getting animals in need of veterinary care healthy, and ready to join our adoption program so they can find their new family. Everyday we are seeing a rise in the number of animals that require urgent, and more extensive and specialized surgeries than the typical spay/neuter. The surgeries come with a high price tag, but it is our goal that no animal goes without the care they need to be happy and healthy to find their new families. By supporting the Brant County SPCA you are ensuring no animal goes without the life saving surgeries they need, and deserve. You’re a part of their story as they move on to the next chapter of their lives.
